WeisserSchneeVor 7 Tagen#85125628I am honestly surprised that so many people think bad about Elaina since episode 3. I really didn't expect this.
I mean you encounter this kind of posts quite often.
Quite sad that all these people perceived her wrongly
I love her so far I think she's great. I would buy a figure of her in a heart beat.

Have not gotten round to watching the show but it seems many people simply misunderstand her role/
purpose. At least within the LN she is not meant to be a heroine or similar. She is meant to watch events unfold and sometimes nudge so as to cause a story to evolve in a specific direction. She is not even a "character" as we are used to so judging her (and her morals) based on that does not make sense.

Her purpose lies solely in watching and creating interesting stories.

The character itself might end up being what you guys are describing, but so far the anime didn't do a good job of making it clear why she decided to do nothing in those last two short stories. IMO it left too much to the interpretation of the viewers, which would explain why it's so polarizing. The situation can really be interpreted both ways with the little information that we have so far.

I've seen quotes from the light novel and it seems like she wasn't as indifferent as some of us perceived her in that episode, so maybe the show will improve on conveying emotions properly (I hope).

No prob. I just don't want to see you write off such a unique character too quickly. Keep giving her a chance and see where the story goes. I also agree that I want to see her put into some situations where she shows some weakness to make her more "human" and make her realize she isn't omnipotent.

BuyMyFigsVor 7 Tagen#85119624snippedI can see where you're coming from and I may have let the way she responded to everything cloud my judgement. Like you said, having power doesn't stop you from being powerless in certain circumstances. I'm just hoping we can see more of her vulnerable side like in episode 1 to balance out the smugness, though she may be detaching herself from the terrible things unfolding before her to cope and protect herself. I also recall her mother telling her to prioritise her own well-being over everything so I can't entirely blame her for the way things panned out. Sometimes it may be better to go with logic rather than your heart.

In any case, I won't deny that Elaina is a unique character who's capable of making people write paragraphs about her. Haha now it seems like I'm backtracking but the whole point of discussions is to see things from other perspectives, no? Thanks for making me give a second take on the character and story.

2B9SVor 7 Tagen#85111706She still opens each episode with an arrogant narration about how great she is and still carries herself with a holier than thou attitude. Not to mention Kino is only human whilst Elaina is a top class witch who IS capable of helping if she really wanted to. Instead we get a cold "oh well not my problem lol next village". What's the point in learning magic if you're not going to put it to good use? To show off and write about your greatness in a diary? Seems quite shallow to me.

This is why I said she's logical and realistic. So say she forced the slave owner to give the cute loli her freedom, what would the slave do then? She'd be out of a home, with no money, no way to support herself. She'd probably end up getting taken in by some other abusive rapist or killed or starve in a back alley. Should Elaina kill the fat molester? Then she'd gain a bad reputation because he technically wasn't doing anything wrong or illegal. He's just s shitty person. And if he died, who would take care of the son? And we don't know what will happen. Maybe the son will get wise one day and save her from his father and give her a good life.

And with the guy and his sister, she could have saved him from turning into a plant possibly, but he was clearly so distraught over his sister he'd probably go back to her again. She isn't going to destroy the entire flower field, and she can't turn his sister back to a human. This series does a good job of showing that even if you HAVE a lot of power, there are a lot of situations where you can't and shouldn't use it.

As for her being smug, I personally think it's kinda cute. I'm sick of all the shy, embarrassed, timid anime characters. And there's nothing wrong with being prideful and "writing about your greatness in a diary." Are people with talent supposed to hide in the shadows so they don't hurt the feelings of the weak? They earned the right to show off their hard work and skill.

WeisserSchneeVor 7 Tagen#85112122That's untrue. She never acted like "that's not my problem".
Also, yes it's true she is a top class witch, but there was nothing she could have done last episode. She realized it and decided to do nothing. Like every rationally thinking person would have done too. These situations were just beyond any help
I may have exaggerated how she reacted to the situation a little bit, but I still wish we could've gotten a little more from her emotion wise. Of course it's still early days in the series so I won't totally write her off as a character and give myself time to warm to her.
