Hobby Max ✪ 1/7 Radio Eva Asuka [BOTH VERSIONS]Hobby Max ✪ 1/7 Radio Eva Asuka [BOTH VERSIONS]Review

Hi MFC! I've been waiting forever for Hobby Max's Radio Eva Asuka figures (ITEM #870764 and ITEM #851375) and they finally arrived. I'm excited to finally be able to share some photos and thoughts with you all!

Please note that this will be an image heavy review!

✪ THE BOX ✪

The packaging is absolutely stellar for this figure. They radiate this trendy, chic vibe that I adore. In particular, the Full Color one has a very beautiful holographic effect on Asuka's name that looks amazing in the light and was unfortunately hard to capture in a still image. Opening the shipping box and having that be the first thing you see really makes it feel like you're unpacking a pair of expensive sneakers or something! The Original Color version (greyscale) just has a simple black & white "Asuka" on it.

Note both boxes feature the Original Color artwork for Asuka. Personally I would have liked it a bit more if the Full Color one actually had the full color art of her, but I suppose it fits with the whole minimalist, black/white vibe of the rest of the packaging.

Unlike most figure boxes, you pull up on a small fabric tag at the top to slide out the figure. It felt like I was opening an expensive whiskey bottle! It's definitely very unique and adds to the luxurious vibe of the figure. Inside, the figure is inside a couple layers of plastic packaging. There's an instruction sheet, which isn't really necessary since there isn't much assembly required.

✪ THE FIGURE ✪

I didn't bother taking pictures of the base as it's a very simple disk base with the Radio Eva name printed on it. Note that it's a glossy acrylic base, which means it will be a fingerprint magnet! I left a couple fingerprints on them putting Asuka on the base, which were difficult to clean off since wiping them with a cloth just created smudges on the base. You'll need some water or perhaps a microfiber cloth to clean them off better.

The singular peg is metal, which I always appreciate as it's more sturdy than plastic pegs. However, the fit was insanely tight and it took a terrifying amount of pressure to get her on the peg (and a similarly terrifying amount to yank her off). At first I thought I was inserting it at the wrong angle, but nope - it was just that tight. You can see below that I couldn't get her foot all the way onto the peg in the end, which unfortunately gives her a bit of a wobble.

Let's do a turnaround of them side by side!

Both figures look absolutely stunning with no significant defects that I could find!

Let's look at some side-by-side comparisons of various details! The small pops of color on the otherwise greyscale Original Color version really catch your eye. Both versions have a nice, subtle shading on the white shirt that gives it a more cloth-like appearance and depth. I found that the Original Color version's jacket had a slightly shiny appearance, reminiscent of a leather bomber jacket.

I love the details in the creasing and lines of the jacket. I actually own several similar jackets and it was the biggest motivation for me buying this figure to tell you the truth... I'm a sucker for this type of fashion! The shading on the Full Color version is beautifully done.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/03/21/2666250.png

Top-view of her hair. I sort of wish the Original Color one had kept her red hairpieces instead of making them grey. I think it would have added a really lovely pop to it, and they're very iconic parts of Asuka's design! Lovely shading on her hair in both versions - I'm really pleased with how the Original Color version doesn't end up being dull and one-tone even with the limited palette.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/03/21/2666251.png

The back of both jackets features a red NERV on the back (partially obscured by her hair) and a NERV patch on her right arm. I'm impressed with the detail of the patch! The text reads "God's in His heaven. All's right with the world" around the circle. You can see more of the glossy/shiny effect I mentioned on the jacket in the Original Color version. Once again, I love the creasing and details on the jacket, it makes it so much more realistic.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/03/21/2666254.png

The skin tone is much warmer and peach colored on the full color version. The fingernails in both are sculpted and have a touch of color to them.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/03/21/2666255.png

The whites of Asuka's eyes in the Full Color version aren't as well defined and blend into the color of her face a little. This effect doesn't look too bad in the Original Color version, but it does look a little weird in the Full Color one to me. Another tiny nitpick here is that the bangs on the Full Color are a bit flat and could maybe have used a tiny bit of shading to give it more depth.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/03/21/2666253.png

The zipper detail on the Full Color version stands out a lot more than the Original Color. I think the latter would have benefitted from a different shade of grey for the zipper to make it stand out, as it really blends into the rest of the jacket and looks a bit boring here.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/03/21/2666256.png

The Full Color Asuka sports some pretty cool kicks! The soles of the shoes have a spunky red, yellow, and black coloring that's lost in the Original Color version (which is just entirely black).

✪ FINAL THOUGHTS ✪

To be completely honest, I'm not a die-hard Eva fan, so the main reason I picked up these figures was because of her fashionable street-wear appearance. I'm a huge sucker for that look. :P I could not be happier with how they turned out, from the chic packaging to the beautifully detailed figure. I originally planned to just get the Original Color version because of what a unique figure it was, but I'm glad I ended up splurging for both. They look amazing side by side!

Asuka makes me extremely excited to see how the rest of the Radio Eva line turns out. While I personally probably won't be picking up the other characters (Asuka was my favorite after all), I have high hopes for them and will be excited to see how they delight other collectors.

Pros
- Gorgeous sculpting and painting
- Eye-catching box design
- If you like street-wear fashion... you'll like this! I just want to steal her outfit...

Cons
- Tight foot peg makes her a massive struggle to assemble/disassemble - your mileage may vary on this!
- (Personal preference) Very minor color detail issues in both versions, such as the color of Asuka's eye whites blending into her skin color in the Full Color version

Which Asuka do you prefer? Will you be picking up any of the Radio Eva figures? Let me know in the comments! Until next time, MFC ~ <3

Very nice review! In the end I think I prefer the original color version. :)

azureblueVor 1 Monat#94341807I have Original Color Mari preordered, but I am a bit worried about whether or not she'll fit in with my other figures. How does Original Color Asuka look in your display?
I have her displayed next to the full color one by themselves for now since they go together. I think compared to my other figures she will stand out due to her greyscale color scheme. If I had to display her with other figures, maybe she would go best with other figures that also have a dark palette?

Great review! Detailed but to the point and lots of good, useful pictures. Kind of a shame the holographic text is only on the Full Color version's box, but it makes sense.

While I love Full Color Asuka's bright and bold colors, I prefer Original Color Asuka because IMO her color scheme fits the somber tone of the pose and face better, not to mention that its a very unique color scheme.

freshringoVor 1 Monat#94303243Hmm, I went back and tried pushing it down more but it wouldn't budge. However, after that I tried pulling her off the peg (which was also a struggle T_T) and noticed some bits of PVC coming out of the hole. Examining the other one I had, it seems like there might have just been excess PVC clogging up the hole or something on the sides? After repeating the on/off process a few times they're both going on the pegs noticeably smoother (although bits of PVC coming off in the process is scary...I was triple and quadruple checking the angle to make sure it was lined up right and I wasn't destroying the peg hole)
So many figures are amazing but have scary assembly processes... ITEM #116883 is personally my vote for deceptively complex but easiest to assemble figure. I've never experienced such buttery smooth, perfect fitting pegs... :')

Oh no, if it's going to be like that please don't push it (;A;) I really wouldn't want it to get broken or something! It's become so hard to find right now >.< If it's excess PVC, maybe there can be people here who know how to deal with it, if you ask in a separate place?
Wow, I'd never imagine that figure having an easy assemble as you mentioned. :') That's so lucky~ I think no matter how great quality a company is, they manage to screw up something every now and then. I had more problems with a couple of scaled figures, than I had with simple prize figures my entire time of collecting. It's especially frustrating because we pay a good amount of money to these, wait for months -sometimes years- and we at least want everything to fit in their place easily... ;( I hope everything goes well with yours ;;

By the way, I really love the original monochrome version now that we see it up close. Especially the eyes. I'd love get it if I had more extra cash, but I already caught Asuka in the aftermarket hahah orz

I have the full color ver and I absolutely love her. She is the biggest scale figure that I own. I have pre-ordered Kaworu and Shinji too. Now I'm looking for Rei in the after market.

flyingteapotVor 1 Monat#94303219I don't %100 remember, but I'm sure it wasn't as smooth as you'd imagine! :D As in, I didn't struggle as much as I did with some very, very frustrating figures (this was traumatic lol); but it wasn't a perfectly easy "click and done" either. I don't know if I could explain ^^;
After making sure the angle of the feet and the peg were absolutely correct, I had to push in a little as well, but eventually it fit without any problems. But by no means it was smooth.
However, since base is glassy, I got worried for a second about cracking it. Thankfully it didn't. That's why I'm not pushing you to do it if you're not comfortable with it, it's up to you. ^^

freshringoVor 1 Monat#94303209Ooh, I might have just gotten unlucky? Both of mine were a massive struggle to get on their pegs. I thought I might have been trying the wrong angle but it didn't really seem like there was any other possible angle ^^; I'm glad to hear yours went on smoothly though! Hopefully mine were just outliers!

seasteasVor 1 Monat#94303200loved this review! Super detailed and further plunging me into sorrow bc I don't have her :((((

; w ; I'm sure I will have similar sorrow as the rest of the Radio Eva figures come out. I saw some pictures of the Rei one and my resolve to only get Asuka started weakening...

flyingteapotVor 1 Monat#94303204I only have the colored one, but the peg fit perfectly without any trouble, so I think it shouldn't stay half-way like that. :/ Although I wouldn't want anything breaking or cracking with yours, so you should decide if you want to try pushing any further.
