Hi there everyone, I hope you've had a Happy New Year thus far :) I'm here today to bring you my very first review of a scale figure. I'm pretty far into my collecting journey as of this moment but I haven't really taken the time to fully analyse every nook and cranny of one of my treasured possessions. I've never reviewed a tiny person before so please bare with me if I don't use the right terminology haha. This review is quite picture heavy so I apologize in advance if I murder your internet connection ;^;

I'll be breaking down the quite recent release from Hobby Max's line of Radio Eva figures, the first being Souryuu Asuka Langley (ITEM #870764) or simply Asuka for those familiar with the anime series.

Radio Eva is Evangelion's very own official merchandise line, specialising primarily in clothing. It is quite clearly inspired by Japanese fashion streetwear and has the price tags that usually comes with the territory. The promotional art in particular can be quite striking as it features the main characters doing model-like poses rocking their own merch head to toe.

Now Eva is no stranger to OOC commercials and branding (queue Schick x Evangelion ad) so it comes as no surprise that they'd capitalize on its popularity. And honestly... I love everything about it. I mean, you can't look at this and not think it's dope:

https://i.redd.it/xsb7gnyi03x51.jpgA little over the top but that never hurt anyone, right?
This brings us to Hobby Max's take on this peculiar brand. They're releasing their own figure set based on this fantastic art illustrated by Yoneyama Mai (who does the promo art for the Radio Eva Store and has worked on various anime):

One of many things that sticks out about this figure set is that each character comes with their own colour variation: Original Colour and a more vibrant Coloured Version (ITEM #851375). Original Colour is just that, the original monochrome look with splashes of colour depicted in the illustration. Here is a side by side comparison of Asuka so you can get a good idea of how these variants differ from one another:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/09/19/2300388r1568871516.jpegQuite the difference, eh?
I personally chose to go with the Original version as you don't come across such a unique colour scheme every day. This version was exclusive and only available to order through the Radio Eva Store and AmiAmi. Without further ado, here's my review.

Starting with her sleek box, which might be a showstopper in and of itself. I felt like I was unpacking a luxurious pair of shoes, which is very on brand with the vibes of the Radio Eva Store. Even the smell emanating from inside gave off the sensation of a fresh pair of kicks.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599237.jpeg
Each side of the box has a very minimalist aesthetic about it that elevates its design to the next level. The tab on top allows you to gently slide her out and is very satisfying. An awesome graffiti style font that spells out her name splatters across this side.

On another side there is an illustration of Asuka that comes with a subtle glitch filter added to it which is a nice touch.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599234.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599233.jpeg
You can also see it says 'Radio Eva 10th Anniversary' in a few places, implying that this is a special celebratory collaboration.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599232.jpeg
All in all we're off to a good start when we see how much effort they put into the packaging alone.

Now onto the star herself. Asuka is a 1/7 scale and stands at approximately 25cm tall. Here is a full view collage of the figure itself:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599238.jpeg
She doesn't give much away in terms of emotion, displaying a rather melancholic face as she looks off into the distance. If anyone knows Asuka as a character this might be the last facial expression you'd expect from her but Radio Eva is all about showing the characters in a new and fun light so I don't mind this depiction of her at all.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599231.jpeg
Although the figure is primarily black and white, her skin still radiates a subtle peachy colour which I really appreciate as they could've just taken the easy route and kept it all one tone.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599230.jpeg
We get a glimpse of her classic original design as she still rocks her iconic interface headset hair clips in her flowy hair.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599229.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599228.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599227.jpeg
The main focus of this figure is definitely the clothing. Asuka may have the most simple outfit of the set but there are still little easter eggs scattered all over it that gives nice small nods to fans of the series.

First is her plain white top with a red logo on the chest. Now if you look closely you will notice that this tiny logo is actually a doll and this particular doll is an essential plot device in the original anime (though this one's from the rebuild films and not the original series which has a much creepier appearance and backstory). Without spoiling anything I'll just say it plays a significant roll in Asuka's character development and I love that they incorporated it into her outfit.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599226.jpeg
Her jacket sits loosely on her frame, sliding off her left shoulder as she presses her hand to her thigh, showing off her slender fingers. I'm a big fan of the glossy finish on her jacket and hairclips as well. She holds her right arm up to her face and shyly hides her hand inside her sleeve which I find very cute. She neatly tucks her shirt into her short skirt thus complimenting her laid-back style.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599225.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599224.jpegCan anyone please explain to me what this purple, white and green tag-like thing on her sleeve is? I can't for the life of me figure it out. The colours are similar to that of Evangelion Unit-01 but I still wonder what purpose it serves...
On the back of her hoodie is the iconic logo of the fictional organisation Nerv. It is written in big bold red lettering which definitely gives it a strong presence, much like the aura it emits in the anime.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599222.jpegIt's very difficult to get a proper angled picture but I swear it says Nerv ;^;
The back of her right sleeve also has a circular patch with the same word and the organisations slogan which reads 'All's right with the world, God's in his Heaven'.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599221.jpeg
Her long legs lead us down to her feet that are wearing humble sneakers and ankle socks. I'm not too educated on footwear so please forgive my ignorance if you're a sneakerhead ;^; The base she stands on is simple but effective and gets the job done. I can't imagine it looking any other way when you notice the overall theme they're following.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/05/2599219.jpeg
If there's one flaw I'd have to point out, it would be that she needs to be displayed at a certain angle as her face can look quite awkward front and centre. I'm sure you can say that a lot of figures look best displayed a specific way though so it's not a major drawback.

Overall I'm very satisfied with my purchase and plan to keep an eye on future releases for this set. Kaworu in particular is a must have for me. Just look at this beautiful angel:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2021/01/22/2614001.jpeg
Mari also looks amazing but I'm not the biggest fan of the Rebuild movies (save for the KawoShin moments in the 3rd film huehue) so I'm not sure about picking her up when I'm not too fond of her source material. I would've preferred Misato as I feel like Mari's mature/sophisticated outfit would also suit her but I understand that the focus is on the teens of the series so it's just wishful thinking on my part.

I'd love to hear your opinions on the Radio Eva set by Hobby Max. What colour variation do you prefer? Do you plan to pick up the whole set or just certain characters? Please let me know :)

Thanks for reading my long-winded review, any feedback is welcome!

2B9SVor 3 Monaten#89798149No worries, thanks for still taking the time to comment :) Ooh I've also been keeping a close eye on Wave's Asuka, it looks very promising. Having a figure of her wearing casual clothing and her shiny plugsuit would be nice. Damn that UC set is pricey. ( ౦ ‸ ౦ ) It is very beautiful though so I'm sure you'll be satisfied with your choice!
Yes, I'm definitely going to pick up Shinji as well! Kaworu would be lonely otherwise lol. I agree that no other figure of his has really captured my attention until this one was revealed. I think it's because Shinji has such a simple design that it's hard to capture his true essence, which is a very interesting and complex character. The clothes he's rocking really make him shine and I don't think he'll get drowned out by my other figures.
A long wait ahead but I think it's well worth it. I'll have to wait and see how the coloured variant turns out but I'm already leaning towards the original B&W version. The intense green just pops so well against the monochrome.

Yes, let's hope Hobby Max will succeed with Shinji (but I have no doubt about that) and I agree with you about the nice contrast between the green and black and white.
And yes, that price of UC's set hurts! You get 2 figures and a big entry plug for sure, but at that price UC don't have the right to fail. I'll take my final decision when they'll unveal the official pictures

ArchiwheelVor 3 Monaten#89793003I'm late haha! Thanks for this nice review. I was super on the fence for this Asuka. I wanted to P-O her but finally I made the difficult choice to pass on her because I was more enjoyed by the future release ITEM #943602 and the upcoming set ITEM #872837.
On the other side I'm super hyped for Shinji ITEM #872780.
I have never been seduced by any existing scale of him but I think that this one will finally be the scale he deserves. What do you think?
He will be the last one to release so I would expect a (mid?) 2022 release.
Of course I'll go for the original black and white ver that fits to the original concept art.

marrieletsgoVor 4 Monaten#89547820Great review! I wanted to pick her up but missed on her pre-orders, and am too afraid to look for the aftermarket price, but overall I think she’s beautiful and a great price/quality ratio!Thank you~ I had missed out on PO's for her as well but someone had cancelled their order on amiami so I quickly jumped on that ASAP >:3 I'm sure she'll show up pre-owned on there or mandarake and it's still early days since her release so hopefully the aftermarket won't go insane so soon. Good luck!

GodlikeSaschaVor 4 Monaten#89552297Mine is still stuck in Japan but this shows what I have to look forward to when I finally get her. This was a very nice preview heheAww I hope she finds her way to you soon! My pics don't do her justice as she looks even better in person.

TjilpVor 4 Monaten#89559158Hadn't heard about these figures before but they look so badass! It's really cool to see fashion styled figs like this, and those special colored versions make it even more unique and nice to look at, I think. The whole set looks great, like they're walking on a catwalk of sorts.
Nice review :)
Yeah I was late to the party as well but when I saw someone post that amazing illustration I had to further investigate and I fell down the rabbit hole of wanting every single one of them haha. I really love Hobby Max as a manufacturer, like Myethos they think outside of the box and make really unique figures no other company would dare to. Your take on them looking like they're on a catwalk is spot-on!

CantisamaVor 4 Monaten#89538976Thanks for the great review. I have her colored ver and she turned out great. A nice change of pace from the usual angry Asuka.
The tag-like thing on her jacket is attached to a pocket zipper (the zipper is easier to distinguish on the colored ver). I believe it's what you would pull to open and close the pocket, although it's longer than those things usually are. Like you said, the colors seem to be a nod to Eva Unit 01.
I don't know about shoe styles either. On the colored ver, the shoes are Eva Unit 02 colored. It's a nice combo with the tag-like thing on her jacket. The shoes are actually one of the standouts for me. It's nice to see Asuka wearing normal clothes.
I'm glad you brought up the box design. It's really cool and doesn't feel at all like you're opening a figure.
I have Rei pre-ordered but will probably skip the rest. Waiting to see how Shinji turns out.
No worries, thanks! That's nice to hear that her coloured figure turned out great as well. If I had the means I would've definitely ordered both versions but my wallet would never forgive me ;^;

Ooh I suspected that might be it as I have my own jackets with pocket zips on the sides but it was just so obnoxiously big I couldn't work it out haha. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Wow how did I not notice the shoes theme on the coloured variant? She really is decked out head to toe in her own show LOL. I really love all these intricate details.

Rei looks very chic and I'm definitely considering her as well. PO's are closed on amiami but I'll probably set up an alert for a slot to open up and pounce on it. >:D

teddyshireVor 4 Monaten#89518031Thank you for the review. I was curious how this line would turn out as I am also considering getting Kaworu. Looks pretty good :)No problemo~ I'm so unbelievably excited for Kaworu and I will definitely be hitting that PO button day one.

FlyingToNowhereVor 4 Monaten#89518339Nice review! I like how you described various things about the figure and aesthetic. I saw videos on Bilibili and got the same "pricey designer sneaker" vibe from the box. Love the stylistic choices, I ordered both variants and am definitely looking forward to getting them. Thanks! Yeah there's so many little details on such a simple figure I was very surprised when I unboxed her. The prototype pics didn't have the Nerv Logo on her hoodie or the Nerv patch on her sleeve so that was a nice bonus. That's really cool that you ordered both variants! They'll look great together.

DexterdrakVor 4 Monaten#89519087Love the review! I received mine just the other day as well :)
Are you thinking of going with the Original (Monochrome) or the Colored version of Kaworu?
Thank you! I hope you enjoy her as much as I do. I was on the fence about Kaworu seeing as the differences between the two versions are so minuscule it took me a few seconds spot them. The key divergence is his eye colour and the coloured variant has his memorable crimson eyes so I've decided to go with that one. I think he'll still match Asuka well enough.
