Vinyl Figures/Art Toys in the DatabaseVinyl Figures/Art Toys in the DatabaseAsk MFC

So, with my recent acquisition of ITEM #934059 , I had to stop for a second and say—wait a minute?

I just linked that item.

It’s in the database.

Which had me question—it’s presumably allowed here mostly based on the fact that it’s produced by Medicom. But then, if so, wouldn’t any items from the Vinyl Artist Gacha series be allowed?

And I know a variety of Bearbricks & sofubi and the like already have a home here. Is there any sort of limit to adding these types of items? Like... is there some degree of removal from what a ‘figure’ is that might say some art toys don’t belong? Or is it safe to say—from a subjective standpoint—that really anything collectible and plastic from Japan can happily reside in the MFC annals?

IDK, this is half a question of actual MFC policy and half one of personal distinction.

Ultimately I’m just wondering if I want to commit to cataloguing my own art toy collection, and/or open the floodgates for a whole new subgenre of figures to start listing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And just as a note: the more I think about that, the more suuuuper helpful it seems. As anyone else who’s into this sort of scene can attest, getting info on these items can be a total bitch sometimes -_-‘

But perhaps it's okay if it looks like an anime character? To be honest, if it was me, I would consider any kind of "original" character generic.
Also, this is from the help page:
"No generic objects/characters. An item will be deemed generic if it has no name or origin. [...]"
However, a bit above this, it says:
"About titles: Title is NOT a required field! Must be used for:
Book/CD titles.
Objects (e.g. Haruhi's School Uniform).
Generic characters (e.g. Neko #1).
Original characters that do not need an encyclopedia entry."
Considering Bearbricks, I'm pretty sure there are no generic ones in the database, like those with just a special pattern.

YOU!! you get where I'm coming from!! lol

That's probably what my main confusion was! But ultimately... we aren't really much closer to answers ;o; since I see the point with bearbricks, but like in the entry this article is based on, the majority of vinyl art toys do represent original characters, which in essence is no different than, say, the hundreds of "original character" illustration-based figures here. It's just stuff like tokidoki, bearbrick, munny, etc, that have a base model that artists can put whatever design on, that I definitely don't think would make the cut.

Art toy? Like what? Japanese vinyl figures?
Vor 5 Monaten
I think it either has to be Japanese origin, a Japanese manufacturer, or a Japanese distributor. That's why some Myethos figures are able to be on MFC and some aren't.

-sorry double post-

I'm not super knowledgeable on this line but I would assume they would all be allowed on MFC yes. Since they're a line of figures by a Japanese company. Like the focus of the site are anime figures yes, but other figures are allowed too as long as they're either Japanese in manufacturer or origin. For example, there's also a fair amount of Sylvanian Families (ENTRY #50769) line toys in the database due to the toy line being Japanese.
