Comiket: a nice way to end a vacationComiket: a nice way to end a vacationDiary

Hi there,

As my vacation was drawing to a close, I thought that a nice way to wrap it up was to visit the fourth day of Comiket on december 31. As you may know, Comiket was spread over 4 days this year because of the lesser event space due to the renovation of the east halls and because of the 2020 Olympics. As a result, the corporate booths would be relocated to the Aomi halls, one Yurikamome stop away from the Tokyo Big Sight. I figured that I wouldn’t have enough time to visit that as well, so I decided to skip that.

Also, this would be the first time you had to wear a wristband to enter. These could either be purchased separately or bought together with the catalog (then you would get wristbands for all 4 days).

As 1 day would be enough for me I bought one for the fourth day at Animate for 550 yen:

The fact that attending Comiket would no longer be free of charge could mean that the number of visitors would be affected, at least that’s what I thought.

Well…

Not really actually.

At least the weather was good with bright blue skies. In fact, the weather was so good that I had to take off my coat (I was wearing a black sweater underneath, so it wouldn't feel too cold).

Thanks to Japanese efficiency it would take only 45 minutes before we were inside. After that, I went to North Hall 1 where most of the doujinshi stands were located:

These were taken at a later time, so there weren’t as many visitors as when I first entered.
First, I went to see a few circles that weren’t situated on the edges of the hall (these were on my checklist). With a bit of effort I managed to find them against the current of endless otaku and got what I wanted from them:

https://i.ibb.co/7S5hty0/DSC04211-001.jpg

2 of those were all ages Cells At Work doujinshi and one was an 18+ doujinshi involving some sort of life-size living Figma-like girl (I found that so intriguing that I decided to buy it).

After that I did something for the first time, namely lining up for one of the more popular outside circles. In this case: Orangemaru. I think their artwork is one of the better ones in existence, especially their color doujinshi. And because of the bearable temperatures it wouldn’t be such a punishment to wait in line outside.
With that said, I lined up for their booth (after I had some difficulty in finding the end of the line). I estimated the line to be at least 40 meters long, so I was a bit worried that they might be sold out by the time it was my turn.
Luckily that wasn’t the case, so when I got at the table I bought a complete 4 doujinshi set for 2000 yen with which I received a special omake:

The top left one was a color doujinshi with the quality artwork I expected, so I was a happy guy.

In the meantime, lunch was a bit overdue so I went to take care of that at the food court next to the Big Sight. After I had my fill I went for North Hall 2, where mostly the non-doujinshi related circles were located:

Among those were circles for papercraft:

https://i.ibb.co/FqV76JN/DSC04162.jpg

https://i.ibb.co/H797cFq/DSC04163.jpg

And circles with a vivid imagination:

Phantom-chan and Lightning-kun. I wish I made that up...

While I was walking around, I saw a big billboard announcing volume 4 of the Nekopara game to be released somewhere this year, so neko-fans be prepared (myself included):

Apparently, the title is going to be “Neko to Patissier no Noel” (ネコとパティシエのノエル), so it might have a Christmas feel to it.

Then there were also the South Halls, where the more idol and cosplay oriented circles were located:

As that wasn’t really my field of interest, I didn’t stay here very long.
After a while I returned to North Hall 1 to see how the visited circles were doing. As expected, Orangemaru sold out and was already packing their stuff. The booth next to them was the circle Hachigo, which had a big poster stuck to the back of their booth:

So cute; I just might look into their work.

Well, here I was kind of done so I headed for the North Hall atrium:

This was one of the rare occasions that the escalator to North Halls 3 and 4 was accessible:

So I took advantage of that and went up to see what was there. As it turned out, there were only circles that sold mainly cd-rom versions of whatever they were selling. Sorry for them, but that didn’t really catch my interest so I went back to the escalator, but not before I took a picture of the atrium as seen from above:

After that, I went for the exit with so many others. It was a nice visit and I got some nice doujinshi as well. Maybe not as many in previous years, but eventually I became more selective in that aspect.

Technically I could visit the corporate booths at the Aomi halls, but since I was going home the following day and still had to pack my luggage I decided to head back to the hotel.

Next blog will be a last round up of various things I encountered in Japan.

I saw day 4 written all over my pixiv favorites, heh.
As usual, I just ordered too many online again.

day 4 was hell of a lineup due to new years eve as well as last day, lineup to enter took a while even with day 4 wristband purchased from day 3. would be much worse if i were to have to line up to buy the day 4 wristband. thank god it wasn't too cold that day as there was a little heat

I think the comics are in the majority as far as doujinshi are concerned, but it is sometimes difficult to tell from the cover alone. Artbooks tend to have more colorful covers though, so often you can sort of tell by glancing over them.

I was there and oh my god the line on the last day was epic. There was just too many people and they had to close the main east halls down. So there was just no space for everyone.
It's also unfortunate we had to pay to get in now. Hope it's not going to be repeated for future.

MacavyVor 8 Monaten#73733084Only 500 yen a day? That's still less than the average con ticket. I assumed you had to pay to get into this so hearing it was free up until now is a huge eye-opener.
I'm not surprised the traffic didn't subside much. I myself rarely go to cons for the panels anymore so paying just 500 Yen to enter an entire building of artists selling original merch for my favorite series would be a no-brainer.

Theoretically it was free in previous years, but it was highly recommended to buy the catalog. I did so almost every time; the only thing is that you ended up with a catalog the size of a telephone book, which added a few kilograms to carry around.

That is an impressive bird's eye view of the sea of people in the south hall...

I was wondering if there will be a volume 4 for Nekopara; the anime just came out too...

Thanks for sharing your time at C97!

I’m not really surprised to see the entrance fee is now ¥500 a day, it’s still less expensive than using the Yurikamome line or the Rinkai line to reach the Comiket haha. As i already said on previous posts about Comiket, this event is really an unique experience to be done at least one time to every fan of anime culture
