Popin' Cookin' - crepe DIY Kit Japanse sweets review tutorialPopin' Cookin' - crepe DIY Kit Japanse sweets review tutorial

MaakieMaakieVor 1 MonatReview
Welcome to another one of my Japanse sweets DIY kit reviews! This time I will make the Popin' Cookin' Crepe kit. It's a less complicated kit than the average one, in which you bake crepes (very thin pancakes) and make an arrangement of fillings, of which you can decide which ones you want to put on the crepe itself.

Cute and colorful packaging as always, and the front shows multiple options of how to decorate your crepe.

The backside shows the instructions, which also with minimal Japanese skill are easy to follow with the drawings and symbols. To make things even easier, there is also an English version of the instructions online at the website of the manufacturer, if you want to follow along with this blog: www.nerune.jp/p...

The foil packaging on the inside has a cut-out for a fake crepe pan in which you can see the folding lines, along with at the bottom some assembly examples.

The other cut-outs are a packaging for a finished crepe (there is only one piece of packaging, so you'll have to re-use it for all crepes), some small instructions about removing pieces and a measuring piece for the banana slices.

First up was cutting the biggest plastic tray in pieces. The most important part was cutting the spinner the correct size.

Then we start with mixing the crepe dough!

The finished crepe dough needs to be placed on the plate until the circle in the middle is full, then it's ready to get spinned.

The spinning had to be done really slowly and in my case also in both directions before it was mixed well.

I know crepes are thin, but this looked very thin to me...but as it was my first time making this kit, I really wanted to follow the instructions and see how it turned out.

The packaging told me I could make 3 crepes like this, which is what I did. Then it was time for some microwave magic~

And here we have three mini crepes! They smelled very good! Unfortunately they do seem a bit too thin, so I think if I were to make this kit a second time I would only make two bigger crepes instead. I don't recommend adding more water to the mixture as the dough was already quite thin.

Also notice that at the bottom of my plate I had washed off a lot of the parts of this set. A big downside with this kit compared to other kits, is that a lot of parts need to be re-used, so you are washing pieces inbetween making small parts a lot.

You are supposed to have quite some sturdy banana mixture according to the instructions, but unfortunately mine were a lot more sloppy and couldn't as easily be cut as shown here.

I was surprised that it actually made a lot of strawberries, but they were also a lot smaller than the one from the strawberry mochi from my previous kit (see BLOG #42318 ).

The chocolate sauce had quite a different texture than the whipping cream.

Now it was time to assemble my first crepe! I tried to follow the instructions as closely as possible to recreate the most varied one on the packaging, using the crepe that turned out the best.

As for the other two, I just threw on the ingredients I liked most, making them a chocolate and whipped cream-mess.

End result

I surprised myself at how good the main one looked! I didn't make pictures of the other two as they were mainly messy with sauce and didn't look as pretty as the more varied one.

I ate the crepes while catching up on episodes of Frame Arms Girl.

The crepes all had a really good taste, the pancake itself has a really tasty and slightly sweet batter. This really made me wish I had made two pieces instead of three, so I could have a better taste at it. Personally I really like the chocolate sauce. The whipped cream was OK, but rather tasted more like milk than actual whipped cream. The strawberry and banana I found a bit too artificial for my taste, but if you're into gummy candy you might like them. As for the sprinkles, they are 100% pure sugar, what is not to like?

This kit really makes me crave to try out actual crepe in Japan! I have tried the French variation over here, but apparently the Japanese ones are totally different! I have been saving up and trying to get to Japan for many years, but every time something unexpected happened which made us spend the money on something else (moving to another place, some big electronics or necessities breaking down that had to be replaced etc.), but right now our goal is to go there late 2020 and book early 2020. Saving up is going well so far. *knocks on wood* So please cross your fingers for me that late 2020 will be possible for my first Japan trip! And then I can finally eat an 'actual' Japanese crepe and compare to this one!

Recommendable?

This kit is very easy and highly recommendable also for beginners. The only downside is that a lot of pieces get re-used and need a lot of cleaning inbetween. The taste of the crepe itself is also good, although some pieces are a bit artificial and rather like candy. If you like these kits and have not tried this one yet, I really recommend it!

For my next DIY kit, I have not decided yet which one it will be, but I am really interested in the Popin' Cookin' Delightful Naan Curry one. As I personally really like curry (both Japanese and India style) and am curious how good it will taste in miniature size. Unfortunately I haven't found any shops yet that ship to Europe that are selling this kit and getting it through proxy might not be fast enough when it comes to expiration dates.

I have gotten the question in multiple blogs if I could translate the ingredients of the food I review. This is not possible for me, as my Japanese is not that good. If you are interested in helping me out with translating, please shoot me a message!

Thanks for reading my blog! My next blog will be an review again, this time from a very badass figure of Ymir ITEM #18544 from Queens Blade. Hope you all are looking forward to it!

Sundae (Vor 1 Monat) #54693526I'm impressed at how well these came out considering their size! The little decorations are cute as well ^^

I'm mostly impressed with the stuff tasting like the actual thing, even though the crepe itself was made in a microwave! :O

lesser-robot-cat (Vor 1 Monat) #54697775I've always wondered about the crepe set. Now I'll have to give it a try, too!

Yeah, this is definitely one of the tastier sets, highly recommend! :) I hope I can get a hold of the curry set in a while too~

Go get that crepe, it's lunchtime after all. xD

victorviper (Vor 1 Monat) #54625020Interesting. At first, I wondered if the crepes would be thick and doughy, but the spinner plus the fact you actually cook the crepes in the microwave yielded results that are not too different from the real thing.

Yeah, the dough for the crepe is quite different than the ones found in other kits for doughs like taiyaki and pizza. Personally, I'm still surprised that it managed to come like that from a microwave instead of an actual pan!
