Complete collection...What's next?Complete collection...What's next?

dollbyndollbynVor 1 JahrDiary
It's probably an unwise topic to consider a week before WonFes, but as my Ordered figures move to the Owned section and my wishlist gets smaller, I find myself pondering over the future of my collecting hobby. If the reveals at WonFes don't interest me much, where do I go from here?

Part of the "problem" is I have grown very content with my collection. There are things I want to get rid of as they don't interest me much anymore, but overall I feel satisfied with it. Because of this, I've grown pickier about what gets added into the mix and it's easier to pass on things I'm not completely in love with.

This should be a good thing as I'll be saving money rather than spending it on things I don't really need. But it's hard to quit being a collector when I've been doing it for about a decade, lol.

After some consideration, I've figured out a few ways I can continue this hobby without buying new figures:

• Improve my displays. The way my collection looks is okay, but could definitely be improved with risers, lighting, and maybe some decor.
• Accessorize my dolls. I have a few of the Azone Pureneemos and could always buy them new outfits to cycle them through.
• Learn or improve in hobbies related to collecting. Learning photography would be fun, especially with the addition of proper lighting and tents. And if I could learn how to paint on a small scale, I could customize figures and dolls in the future. Then I could make my own figures instead of hoping they're released, lol.

If you have had a similar experience, feel free to share how you continued to involve yourself in collecting! Thanks for reading. ♥

dollbyn (Vor 1 Jahr) #31103080You really hit the nail on the head. Like I mentioned elsewhere, many of the things I collected from have gone by the wayside to make room for the newer, popular stuff. Just the way things work, but it means if I don't go looking for new content, I'll eventually run out of things that catch my eye. It's pleasant to be satisfied, but I do miss the feeling of finding that irresistible item I have to have, lol. And who knows? That could change a week from now or even a year, lol. Thanks for commenting!

Oh, absolutely! It's my pleasure. It's reassuring to hear others are having similar experiences. It settles any doubts that I've had about my collecting--that it's okay to feel like you're done; it doesn't necessarily mean that you're dissatisfied or confused. If that makes any sense at all.

I think that also since figures are becoming so much more expensive, I've been waiting to see what things look like after I can see photos of the final product and perhaps get it a little cheaper in the aftermarket--a bit of a gamble, but one I'm willing to take. By that time I've also been able to decide whether I really want something or not. I've had too many experiences where I pre-order something and then don't really want it anymore by the time the release date comes. (I will admit that all of these new Girls und Panzer releases and announcements have been fairly testing, however...)

EsvaldForceswoop (Vor 1 Jahr) #31102325I had a similar way of thinking regarding my Lego Star Wars collection. I still buy one or two sets here and now, but nothing crazy like in my teenage years, where I wanted to get all and everything. I've been wondering why am I no longer interested in the new releases. Most likely it's the mix of being satisfied with my collection and the new releases not really interesting me. There are a few sets I still really want but none of them are on the shelves right now, and I'm not paying the horrendous aftermarket prices.
So what is there to do? As you said improving the display, photography and things like that are nice.
Now I don't know why you collect anime figures, but perhaps there are some characters you'd like to see and they haven't been made yet. Perhaps you could save for them, if they ever got a figure, you'd be ready.
You can also expand into other hobbies, maybe collecting something else. Like how I moved from Lego Star Wars to anime figures. (Thar doesn't mean I got rid of my Lego Star Wars, I love my collection, I'm just pretty much done with it)
I know it's not much of a help, but I hope I could help at least to some degree.

I'm not sure I could 100% place why I collect figures, but there are certainly characters I've always hoped for even though the likelihood of them being made is slim. Saving up for a potential figure may be a good idea. Most of what I have are figmas, Nendos, and prize figures, so maybe I could save for a more quality figure in case one I like is released.

I definitely know what you mean about shifting from collecting one thing to another. I have quite a few western fashion dolls, which are what I collected before getting into figures. :) Not sure I would go back to collecting more of them, but I'm pretty happy with what I have even if there could be some downsizing, lol.

It's always helpful to get some insight from others! Thank you for commenting! :)

revarrie (Vor 1 Jahr) #31101648I'm in a very similar position. I haven't purchased a figure in a long time--I've instead been focusing on much smaller things, namely rubber straps, but even with those things I feel like I'm nearly done. I suppose I've just gotten everything that I've wanted. I still enjoy checking for new releases, but I've found it much easier not to rush into pre-ordering--a lack of desire to do so, even.
After doing a thorough purge of my collection this past summer, I've been fairly satisfied with the things that I have. Whether it's my interests drifting elsewhere, that I'm sick of spending the way I have been for years, or the fact that I don't even have any more space for anything new, I don't know. But I'm certain in due time I'll either return to collecting figures, circumstances be damned, or come across some other expensive thing to hurl my money towards.

LoveChopper (Vor 1 Jahr) #31076001my collection will never be complete. too much figures, too little space and money.
maybe u can start opening and reviewing your figures, taking them out for photos, etc

Lol, who knows, I may have written this blog too soon and there will be things that interest me at WonFes! I assume not since many of the things I like have come and gone in popularity or similar, plus I can be too picky. I've only dipped my toes into reviewing once. I enjoyed it, but I feel like there are others more suited to reviewing figures than me. Dolls could be a different story since I've collected them much longer, though! :) Thanks for commenting!

It comes from me not watching much current anime and being pickier when there's less shelf space available, lol. This can always change if a shiny, new piece of media attracts my eye and they make merch I like for it. A good example is when they eventually continue Madoka. My wallet will not be spared, heh. migur (Vor 1 Jahr) #31075821action 2 and 3 seem awesome to look into :) best of luck with collecting :D
Thank you! My displays definitely need work, so maybe that's a good (and fairly inexpensive) place to start. Thanks for commenting!

Solarstormflare (Vor 1 Jahr) #31075825I'm not sure you need to keep on buying things to be a collector. I'm in a similar position; besides some scales and nendos this year, i don't have anything i desperately need to buy. The whole reason i collect is the 3-d element of owning sculptures; they're always a little different depending on the angle. For you, maybe try taking some cool pictures? That might be fun!
Very true about the collector thing. Yeah, pictures might be a fun idea. Part of me has always wanted to get better at it and this could be a good time to study up more on it. :) Thanks for commenting!
