[TIPS?] First time convention attendee!

TomoeTomoeVor 1 JahrAsk MFC
Hello MFC Community!

I hope posts like these are okay. I read through the guide-lines since I mostly only post articles relating to loot / figurine posts.
I'm going to be attending my first convention this weekend, and I'm super excited! To be specific, I'll be attending Fanime this week.

I'm only wondering for a few tips for the experienced convention attendees if anybody doesn't mind telling me about their overall convention experiences, etc! Haha I understand that each convention is different, but I imagine they can't all be so skewed from each other, so any experiences are welcomed. <3

- My friends told me not to bring all of my money all at once, so how much money should I bring per day? (I'll be attending 3 days, first day is for cosplay, second and third day are for shopping! YAY!)
- How big of a bag should I bring? I was originally planning on bringing a small shoulder purse and carrying my merchandise by hand.
- How safe are you from bootlegs at cons generally? I know conventions usually have a no-bootleg policy and I'm quite keen on spotting bootlegs, but have you ever personally gotten a bootleg by accident at a convention?
- @ COSPLAYERS!! : This is also my first time cosplaying (I'll be Minami Kotori woohoo!), should I bring anything for backup? I'll be driving to and from the convention so I'll have a vehicle around 10 minutes away from the center.

Basically do's / don'ts for conventions are very helpful to me at this point since I tried to run a google search and they gave me absolutely nothing useful LOL. Thank you! :) See you guys around the community as usual!

omgusosilly (Vor 1 Jahr) #10480532WHOAMG. My friends and I had an awesome 3AM post-shenanigans bonding session at the hentai screenings last year. Thank you. We're forever bonded and we're returning for shenanigans round 2 this year. :)...You're very welcome ^^. When I was younger, I was upset about all the distraction/heckling/rover hand checks going on detracting from the screen/story. But, it's all in good fun and if you were able to bond with your friends bc of it, that's a bonus for me!

omgusosilly (Vor 1 Jahr) #10480532...When I run through dealer hall, I always make sure my phone is charged and MFC is open so I can check prices when I need to.Be discreet about it peoples! Tell you the truth, if you do this in front of the owners' face it pisses them off and then you're less likely to get packaged deals and no tax etc from them.

omgusosilly (Vor 1 Jahr) #10480532It's very rare that I'll find a good deal on a figure at fanime's dealer hall, but they are out there!DEFINITELY! Last year I saw Zettai Reiko ITEM #167206 sitting on a high shelf for the ENTIRE CON $125 straight up! & NOBODY bought her, lol.

One thing I forgot to mention, if you're like me and hate standing in lines sometimes, buy your badge fromm clockwork alchemy sister con!www.clockworkal... head on over when you have time etc! Much much FASTER

I'm also rather too lazy to read through all the comments, but I agree with some to bring a lotttt of cash. You can skip out on tax / false charges this way. When I run through dealer hall, I always make sure my phone is charged and MFC is open so I can check prices when I need to. It's very rare that I'll find a good deal on a figure at fanime's dealer hall, but they are out there! IE. Last year, I got two Gilgamesh nendos for $52.5 each no tax (I bargained a little bit) ITEM #166890 and also a Wo-Class nendo for $70. After I purchased the wo-class nendo ITEM #227037, the seller immediately raised it to $80. These purchases were both on a Saturday.

I hope you enjoy the con! :)

Congrats on your con cherry! This will be my 15th year of fanime! This is a longshot but if you see a guy wearing Pretty Cure shirt/hoodie plus K-on! sneakers with Anime jeans, blue backpack with Precure badges ... THATS MEH

EDIT:
If you're underage, fill out the waiver before falling in line to buy a badge! You don't wanna get turned away b/c you're under 18. Looks like this, I don't have this years' www.fanime.com/...

Dealer's hall does have bootlegs, these fools mix it in with the official merchandise ... they paid money to be here so there's no way to keep them out.

Don't lose your badge or you will be charged for replacement! People will steal your badge be careful!

If you're of age, bring your ID to Hentai nights' screenings after 22:00! I'm one of the co-founders, it's my "legacy" ^^

Secure a safe place to put your stuffs. Car is usually sufficient but beware of break-ins.

I'm too lazy to read the other comments right now (it's been a long day) so forgive me if I'm repeating BUT

"- My friends told me not to bring all of my money all at once, so how much money should I bring per day? (I'll be attending 3 days, first day is for cosplay, second and third day are for shopping! YAY!)"
I would do it in reverse, let the first day be for shopping because limited goodies/exclusives will run out. Some people prefer shopping on the last day because they hope for lower prices but I find people lowering their prices less and less. They're onto the game :p

- How big of a bag should I bring? I was originally planning on bringing a small shoulder purse and carrying my merchandise by hand.
Bring a bag just big enough for your essentials and inside of that put an extra carrying tote bag or two, not every vendor offers bags unfortunately (or they give flimsy ones and you want something that will protect your treasure from bumps). Also put a few rubber bands in case you get freebie posters. God tier: get a poster tube.

- How safe are you from bootlegs at cons generally? I know conventions usually have a no-bootleg policy and I'm quite keen on spotting bootlegs, but have you ever personally gotten a bootleg by accident at a convention?
No, generally I see bootlegs few and far between (no more than 2 a year) and they're generally VERY obvious.

About money, I usually have a mini wallet with cash/cards/ID and the rest of the cash tucked away elsewhere. Wallet gets lost? All is not lost! Still have cash and can cancel my cards via phone. Also helps to see how rapidly cash is being spent if you don't have it all in your face at once (If you're spending a lot you will have to "reload" a lot).

I don't cosplay but: bring comfy shoes!

-Ignore the advice people said about waiting until the last day to buy merchandise. Trust me on this one. Many vendors don't actually know how popular an item is until stock runs low so they start jacking up the prices as the weekend progress. I've bought an Iron Man figma for a fraction of the original price because the hired workers had no idea what they are selling.

^^^ This. c: I went to anime conv. some years I did knew it.. some is lucky and some don't..
I always buy few items like 'early' [as last day] on first day of really wanted to buy this..we won't know if this item is still sale or sold out in quickly! =o

Please ALWAYS use a cash money at conv place! yes they accept some credit cards..but be beware they will rip you off.. o.o;

You don't want to know about how much money you need to conv. place, Tomoe...just don't.. o.o;
just LIMIT shopping money at conv..of 3 or 4 days.. I always use is $110+ EACH of conv days each..

just bring some drinks and snacks with you in there if drink or eat at conv is little high costs.. ^^

We know never do bad things in conv hotel place..but..please don't destroy some of hotel's things.. x.x;

have fun. c:

"Voice Acting with Hentai III" It is R rated and will "card" attendees. It is a panel where the hosts play a scene from a Hentai and random audience members are picked to fanfub it. I hope this year's will be as hilarious as the other two.
I'm assuming others on here will be selling as last year's I met mfc'ers that were selling as well.
As for my identity... it would be a great guessing game, ha! If you guess correct and find me, I can give a pretty darn good "mfc discount" if you're interested in anything from my roster of figures.
Most people sell on Friday than Thursday, so definitely go on Friday if you can only choose one or the other days.

Sounds real interesting, I'll give it a go if I'm still there! 11PM is pretty late, but sounds fun anyways (: Thanks for the list, I had no idea it was here so I'm really intrigued by so many things! I better make a list of what's going on on which day so that I'm organized and all set to go!
Haha, I'll definitely try to find you then!

Tomoe (Vor 1 Jahr) #10426461No problem at all! I'll be doing her season one opening outfit. It was honestly a really tough call for me since I love so many of Kotori's outfits, but I decided to go with a simple cosplay my first time around so that 1) I wouldn't have to worry about props 2) I wouldn't have to wear anything that's uncomfortable for me (since her shoes are combat boots, I'm basically as free as her birb self as my go-to shoes are combat boots). It's also very light and unrestricting so that I wouldn't have to worry about the heat at the convention! :)

Yea that one should be rather simple and comfortable. And so many of their outfits look great, I think my favorites would be dancing stars on me.

Tomoe (Vor 1 Jahr) #10426461HAHA sounds like fun! I'll definitely stop by and check it out, what is it exactly? A rated-R event?
Also that sounds great, is there a way I can tell who are my fellow MFC folks? :) I'd love to meet some of you there and check out what everybody is selling

**Warning, the following advice list will be long & descriptive to Fanime exclusively and may not apply to all cons. View spoilerHide spoilerThis is my 3rd year attending Fanime,so I got a lot of good advice for you based on personal experience.

How to prepare for Fanime:
-Make a check off list of what you need to bring. The last thing you want to do is drive yourself back home to bring it back.
-Bring a bottle of water! There are water coolers all around the con for free, so be sure to hydrate yourself.
-Keep track of event times you want to attend beforehand. Make a schedule so you know where you need to be at what time. Make sure to give yourself lots of extra time (see autographs below) and have some freedom between each activity.
-If you are into posters, buy a poster carrier from Daiso. It prevents posters from ripping and wrinkles.

Special programs:
-If you really want an autograph from a guest, show up at least 1.5 hours earlier, especially for voice actors! They are incredibly popular and once they surpass a certain amount of people, they will turn you away.
-Bring your ID in 18+ panels. They will not let you in unless you show you are within the age limit.
-If you are tired, don't rest in the halls. Spend your time in panels instead! You can be sitting down comfortably while someone enlightens you in a program. They are located in Fairmont Hotel instead of the convention center, so be sure to check the map.(I highly recommend the History of Magikarp panel.)

Dealers Hall, Artist Alley, & Swap Meet:
-Ignore the advice people said about waiting until the last day to buy merchandise. Trust me on this one. Many vendors don't actually know how popular an item is until stock runs low so they start jacking up the prices as the weekend progress. I've bought an Iron Man figma for a fraction of the original price because the hired workers had no idea what they are selling.
-However, do look around the entire dealer's hall before committing to a purchase. Some stalls have better prices than others so it's good to survey the prices.
-I have not encountered any bootlegged figures yet, but there are counterfeit plushies sold at this con. If you do see any bootlegged items, be sure to report them to the authorities because it is NOT allowed in this con.
-Some artists selling their works are willing to autograph their goods for free! Just ask them if you are interested.
-The unofficial vendors people in the thread are talking about is Swap Meet which occurs on Thurs & Fri night only. You can haggle and trade with other people here, but please don't low ball.

Other tips:
-Use cash instead of card. Many vendors charge you extra for card, so beware!
-Bring extra bobby pins, hairspray, and knee high sock glue/tape. You will definitely need it for the cosplay as the day goes by.
-Bring a reusable bag instead of carrying items by hand. The moment you buy 2 figures, you can't really hold onto anything anymore, so be sure you have a reusable bag you can easily carry.
-Feet hurting? My pro-tip is to soak your feet in hot water when you get back to your home/hotel for 10 minutes. It won't magically heal your sore feet from walking all day, but it totally helps.

I hope that answers a good chunk of questions. If you got any other questions or concerns, ask away~
