Akane Tsunemori & Shinya Kougami (Union Creative International)Akane Tsunemori & Shinya Kougami (Union Creative International)

Today we’re going to be doing something a little different and review 2 figures in the 1 post: Akane Tsunemori and Shinya Kougami from “Psycho-Pass”, manufactured by Union Creative International. I had never bought from Union before, as they were, and still are, relative newcomers to the figure business, however, I liked their prototypes so much, I decided to take a gamble. Not to mention how much I desperately wanted Psycho-Pass scale figures. Akane was released in July and Kougami was released in August. So let’s take a look at both of them and see how they turned out.

First of all, let’s start this review on a very high note by talking about the packaging/boxes. These are some of the best figure boxes I’ve seen. Not only do they have a very cool design, which is fitting for the series, but they’re also practical and make the unboxing process, amazingly painless. It’s a wonder more figure manufactures don’t take make their packaging like this.

Typically, you’d take the figure being held within the plastic from the top of the box, however, with these boxes; the front cover acts more like a lid, which you just take off. It’s amazingly simple and is a lot easier to manage. It also helps the boxes themselves feel very solid and, unlike some figure boxes, there was no fear of damaging the figure or box.

Something that wasn’t quite as painless was getting the dominator in their hands. Honestly, I can’t quite say why, but it simply wouldn’t go in. It’s like the bottom of the dominator grip was too big for the space where you’re supposed to put it in. It was a terrifying process because it felt like I could damage or break these figures at any second. Thankfully that didn’t happen. It’s hard to give tips as to how to put them in. Just try and make their hands/fingers as loose as possible without being too aggressive. Oddly enough, I found trying to warm their hands to actually work. No idea why that is, or if it even worked, but that’s just what I experienced with both of these figures.

There is a grey-ish type of shading in their hands, but honestly, it’s hardly worth worrying about since the dominators are going to be in their hand covering it anyway.

Let’s take a closer look at the figures individually.

Let me quickly say that I did my best with these photos, but these are just some of those figures that really do look better in person. As result, I’d recommend taking these photos with a grain of salt.

Since she was released first, let’s start with Akane.

There’s no doubt Akane is the weaker of the two figures. Not to say she is bad per se, in fact, I think she compliments Kougami excellently, but she does have more flaws of the two. Many have mentioned that Akane’s face is a little too flat, and it’s hard to deny that. Then there’s arguably, the biggest dividing factor when it comes to these figure: the tone/colour of the their skin. I personally feel it is faithful to the series, however, some may think that the figures are a little too pale, or, especially in Akane’s case, a bit sickly. I have found that lighting has a big role in this perception. I’ve seen some photos, maybe even my own, where I would agree they could look like this, but like I mentioned earlier in this review, in person, especially in good lighting conditions, they look a heck of a lot better and I wouldn’t think this at all.

Personally, I like Akane’s dynamic pose and, to a slightly lesser extent, her facial expression. It looks like something that would be taken right out of the show. A big turn off for some people could be the bar extending out of the base into her leg, however, I don’t think it’s that distracting, especially when you have both figures together. It isn’t there for nothing though, as she does feel very sturdy and it’s obvious it provides plenty of support for her.

There’s no doubt that Akane and Kougami just go together immensely well. In fact, it’s quite feasible to argue that Akane was probably made for the sole purpose of complimenting Ko.

Speaking of Ko, he just exudes badassery. The pose, the expression, his height (25 cm tall) and just the look as a whole makes for a very epic, badass looking figure.

Both figures are highly detailed. Just take a look at the level of detail in the dominator, or the all the creases in their clothes and you’ll see that a fair bit of work has been put into making these figures look as detailed as they are.

Dem creases. Dat colar. Dat Tie. Pure Badassery.

I’d like to take this moment to address a particular detail: Their mouths. Instead of just being your somewhat typical, flat, pink blotch to represent a mouth, you get a mouth, which actually looks like a mouth. Teeth and all. I’m struggling to articulate what this adds, but it’s something. Sure, it’s nothing you’d buy the figure for, but it’s really nice touches like this, and the ones I mentioned earlier, which make you feel like you’re getting a lot more bang for your buck.

The base for both figures is simple, being a black triangle with the Psycho Pass logo on it. You might not think so by looking at it, but both figures are very sturdy on it, so no worries in that regard. Some may argue that the base is too simple, however, when figures have a pose this dynamic, you don’t really need a really elaborate base to take away from the figure, but instead it can rightfully place the emphasis on the character itself.

The base being in a triangle shape is a nice way of giving people incentive to buy more than 1 of the characters, because it looks great when the bases are connected/right next to each other.

As of me writing this review, the remaining Psycho Pass figure by Union, Makishima Shougo, is yet to be released. Although he doesn’t look quite as promising as Ko did, after seeing these figures, I am quite confident he will be, at the very least, of an decent quality. Although these figures won’t be to everyone’s taste, I think there is a lot to like here and I would highly recommend these figures to fans of the series. If you HAD to only get 1, Ko would be the obvious choice, but if you can, I highly recommend Akane as well, after al, they do look great together and it just feels wrong to have one without the other.

Thanks for the detailed review, they do look great together. I think when i first saw them the prototypes were more to my liking but as Christown said, they came out good enough :)

Christown (Vor 5 Jahren) #2351858Great review mate!
They came out decent enough.

Cheers!

Yeah, I think they did. Sure they're not exactly Alter or GSC quality, but they're still decent figures with plenty of highlights among a few flaws.

Moro (Vor 5 Jahren) #2351762The skin tone isn't the problem, it's her face that looks like she collided face-first with a brick wall. Even from the front it looks incredibly squashed to me.

Haha okay I see what you mean. Yeah that's fair enough. It personally doesn't bother me a whole lot, but at the same time, I can't deny it.

Superstickman (Vor 5 Jahren) #2351726As I said, the photos don't really her do her justice. Although she does look a little sickly, it's nowhere near to the extent the photos suggest. But yeah, it was kinda inevitable this sort of problem would arise with figures when the character designs look like they do.

Moro (Vor 5 Jahren) #2351717Akane's face looks as awful as I thought it would, but Kougami looks quite nice I think. Their pale skin matches the series' art style well since everyone often DOES look a little sickly anyway!

RockGodItachi (Vor 5 Jahren) #2351636I've not long finished the first series of Psycho Pass and of course I immediately started figure hunting! I'm planning on getting both of these so thank you for the reviews on both I may get Makashima as well not sure yet, Ko was my fav of the series though as he's such a bad ass!!

Haha, I'm glad to know i'm not the only person to start hunting for figures immediately after finishing a series (this one in particular). I think it's just one of those habits that us collectors pick up XD

Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad I could help!

WindsorSeven (Vor 5 Jahren) #2351400I want to like Akane, but her face looks odd from every angle except one. I do love how their bases fit together though.

I think due her pose, it's really hard to do her justice in photos. Imo she doesn't look quite as odd in person.
