Last Exile - Dio Eraclea and Lucciola - Bust (Alter)Last Exile - Dio Eraclea and Lucciola - Bust (Alter)

MaakieMaakieVor 5 JahrenReview
Please read this before starting to read the review! I bought this figure second hand and thought it was clean, but only after taking the pictures I noticed small amounts of dust on this figure. Unfortunately for me, it's not possible to re-take the pictures, so please ignore any small amount of dust you see!

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a double character figure from Dio Eraclea ENCYCLOPEDIA #8849 and Lucciola ENCYCLOPEDIA #8848 from the series Last Exile ENCYCLOPEDIA #282 ! This trading figure is made by Alter ENCYCLOPEDIA #7619 and is a bust of both characters together. ITEM #2183

I will start off with telling some more about the background of the series and the characters.

Background

The Last Exile is an 26-episode long anime-series with well-known artist Murata Range ENCYCLOPEDIA #8345 as character designer. The series itself is about a fictional steampunk-style world that tells the story of multiple young pilots that are being trained for the war that is happpening between two nations.

Dio Eraclea is the younger brother of a powerful guild leader. He has quite a weird personality, as he can act very childish, but because of his strong will a lot of people see him as a good successor for his sister. Lucciola is Dio's bodyguard and good friend of him. From a young age he was trained in martial arts.

The reason why and how I got them

This trading figure was an impulse buy. I was at a local convention and saw an re-sealed box from this trading figure set at a second hand shop. The shop-owner himself also didn't know which figure was inside. Since I was quite interested in this set of trading figures and them being quite hard to find nowadays, it actually didn't matter to me which one was inside and I decided to buy it. When I got back home from the convention I opened the box and looked at which figure from the set I got...it turned out to be Dio and Lucciola together! Fun fact: Afterwards, when shooting pictures for this review, I found out that there was an "x" marked on the backside that said which figure was inside.

Original art

Although with not exactly the same facial expressions, this figure was based on the following artwork:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0Fa2knqoT8M/Up9vcGyOpII/AAAAAAAAFAo/0jqfH4HP3II/s640/390640.jpg

On the figure, Dio has a way happier expression, but is holding the butterfly the same way. Lucciola has almost the same expressions, although he looks even more sad on the figure.

The Box

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-aRY9JRgtbtg/Up4uhtJ9U1I/AAAAAAAAE-A/pmmLrAjckA4/s640/IMG_8864.JPG

This trading figure comes in a blind box. The front shows some nice artwork from Murata Range, while left, right and backsides show the possible figures that could be inside the box. Overall it's quite "traditional" trading figure box design, but it looks very good!

Something worth mentioning here is the authenticity sticker from Alter which you can see on the backside of the box. I own a lot of trading figures, but never saw an authenticity sticker on the box of one!

First Look

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6cB4sae13ls/Up4uiP9Of_I/AAAAAAAAE-E/Rmg2GCLYKm4/s640/IMG_8865.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-GpJFpKkcCgI/Up4uhsUYQKI/AAAAAAAAE-I/VJhlvfoxv_0/s640/IMG_8866.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-qOjGMUh2sTU/Up4uknvkCCI/AAAAAAAAE-Q/7WCuhLBgm2U/s640/IMG_8867.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-LCGfEGU5FpI/Up4um64bysI/AAAAAAAAE-k/XX2gTw-Bmlg/s640/IMG_8868.JPG

First impression: Their size is huge! They are very big for a trading figure! After that I noticed all the details...there are so much for a trading figure! It was to be expected from a known-for-their-quality-manufacturer like Alter, but I never saw a trading figure from them before, so I was quite surprised!

Looking at all the details!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Rq6RCSOjC2E/Up4umQ8m7MI/AAAAAAAAE-g/cAY3ulqurYY/s800/IMG_8869.JPG

Starting with Dio's face. The first thing that grabs your attention is his blue eye, it stands out from the rest of the detailing since those are more pale tones. The eye is a nicely put on decal. His characteristic make-up is also looking good, except for one small missed spot near his eye. In his hair, he has a small braid, which has some shading to it.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-b8mf0jpcu4I/Up4ung7028I/AAAAAAAAE-s/uiCackWDjcU/s800/IMG_8870.JPG

The same shading is to be seen in the rest of Dio's hair. From this angle, I really like Dio's nose, he even has small nostrils to be seen in the sculpt!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-zEIF2X4cBkA/Up4uqB4z40I/AAAAAAAAE_E/vML8uoOGtkw/s800/IMG_8871.JPG

On the top of his head, he has a small seamline, but overall very acceptable!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-g_x343-dpAo/Up4upIEzSGI/AAAAAAAAE-4/7gH0Sxj9e9w/s640/IMG_8872.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hlljHIfJ_sw/Up4urHz4vzI/AAAAAAAAE_I/3U_QCNYbp6w/s640/IMG_8874.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BTkxFNVcdEg/Up4upzThw4I/AAAAAAAAE-8/LB7ilKe7s2U/s640/IMG_8873.JPG

Dio's uniform has all the detailing from his original design. The paint was also put on very nicely and there are no flaws to point out. It's simple, but done very well in sculpt and paint.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6v2i5U4YS1o/Up4uveAGXrI/AAAAAAAAE_o/do0UGCDngb8/s800/IMG_8875.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JaUo6Y1k-ps/Up4utqaK1NI/AAAAAAAAE_U/F_Ghk9KJoKU/s800/IMG_8876.JPG

In his hand, he holds a butterfly. A small let-down is the fact that the outside of the butterfly doesn't show the pattern, while the inside does! The pattern on the inside is very beautifully detailed, which makes it a shame that the outside doesn't have it. Especially when you have the figure displayed and look at it from the front, only the outside of the butterfly is to be seen. At first I thought it was a mistake on my specific figure, but when I looked at User Pictures on MFC, it seems like it is the same on each individual figure.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OgQf4Ua0EF0/Up4utJxQedI/AAAAAAAAE_Y/WhQWAXp80Xo/s640/IMG_8877.JPG

Lucciola has an almost opposite expression from Dio. The decals and painting in his face are almost flawless. As detailing in his hair, they made some parts white (even in his eyebrows!). Compared to his original design, his hair actually should have been less yellow, but I understand the change, because otherwise both characters would have looked a lot like each other. Still, I can understand if some fans from the Last Exile don't really like this change.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--MnnzzOL9jw/Up4uwceWXpI/AAAAAAAAE_w/2MeyHTLp-e4/s800/IMG_8878.JPG

Lucciola has a small seamline on top of his head. From this angle you can also see how intricate the sculpting of his hair was! A lot of detail here!

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-hqHHXWgHruU/Up4uyVawyPI/AAAAAAAAFAI/X3sP9Yi6Ipk/s640/IMG_8881.JPG

Just like Dio's uniform, Lucciola's uniform is nicely detailed and has almost no flaws.

"Joined" parts

Since this figure exists of two characters together, there are some small parts where they are "joined".

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ehoBZ7MFm18/Up4uvkoNbRI/AAAAAAAAE_s/5qCMNBCy77I/s640/IMG_8880.JPG

The bottom of Dio's hair is joined to the top of Lucciola's back.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Leg-7lxeesk/Up4uxzQwxEI/AAAAAAAAFAA/nHcl95Ipl6A/s640/IMG_8882.JPG

Lucciola's right arm and Dio's left arm.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-3_TE1bTZO0c/Up4uyfZIXqI/AAAAAAAAFAE/AmNeXW4vOJU/s640/IMG_8883.JPG

But their other arms are not combined, so you can even see the detailing on the backs of their uniforms!

The joining was done very nicely. You don't see much of Dio's hair being "stuck" to Lucciola's back and the arms that are together, blend very nicely because of the fabric of their uniforms.

Summary or tl;dr

Positive
- Amazing detailing in the sculpt!
- Very nice paint in especially the uniforms and hair.
- This figure is way better in quality and size than your average trading figure!

Neutral
- Packaging is a normal trading figure box design. Nothing special, but it's good looking.
- Lucciola is more blonde than white-haired.

Negative
- The butterfly Dio is holding has no pattern on the outside, but a good looking one on the inside.

The Scores
Simply put: one of the most amazing trading figures I have ever seen. It does have some small flaws.

Sculpting 9/10
Almost flawless sculpting, amazing quality for a trading figure!

Painting 8/10
Overall the painting was done very well, especially in the uniforms, but there is one thing that is a big let-down: and that is the fact that the outside of the butterfly doesn't have a pattern, while the inside does.

Posing 8/10
Very nice posing, that is quite dynamic for a bust. The two characters together also fit very nicely.

Base 7/10
A simple pedestal with pearl painting. It doesn't take up too much space and holds the figures well.

Packaging 7/10
Normal box design for a trading figure (blinded box). The art on it looks very nice.

And to finish it!

I displayed them for a while inbetween my shelf with other trading figures and action figures (on this picture you can also see their size compared to other trading figures).

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YZWINp4DFUs/Up4u0OgYrcI/AAAAAAAAFAQ/dYSNaehrFHM/s800/IMG_8885.JPG

Currently they are not on display since I am selling them. They look indeed very good for trading figures, but I don't plan on collecting the rest of the set, which is why I put them up for sale. I own way too many trading figures! >.<

For those who read all this way, Thank you! My next review will be about another trading figure: ITEM #2318 She comes together with a doujin which I will also review.

VioFitz (Vor 5 Jahren) #1946520I'm sorry but, Dio's face looked... Kinda dirty there although the details are brilliant for a small figure. On the contrary Lucciola's face looked flawless there but, I can see there's a slight paint bleeds on his buttons.
Nicely done review again!

Both have their small flaws indeed, but keep in mind that's it's only a trading figure! :O

Dio has indeed some small spots on his face, but I can't remove them...so it's not dirt. :(

And thank you very much!

dethblud (Vor 5 Jahren) #1892660I have most of this set of trading figures, including this Dio/Lucciola one. They have by far the best paint jobs of any trading figures I've ever seen, better than some of the scale figures I have even.
Until you pointed them out, I didn't notice the nostrils on these, but they're there in one of my older pictures too. PICTURE #279305
Good review! Thanks for the nostalgia about my favorite trading figures.

To me they feel like scaled figures being downsized to trading figures. Only downsized in size, since the details are just as good as scaled figures!

I think I have never seen nostrils on a figure before. xD I now need to check some of my other (bigger) figures to see if they have any. xD

And no problem! ^w^ It's quite understandable that they are your favorite trading figures! :)

kevinlowl (Vor 5 Jahren) #1892929I'm sorry for this off topic post but,
OMG, IT'S BLOSSOM!!!11!! :D
Where did you get her? Do you have Bubbles and Buttercup as well? :D
Also, that second picture of the figure looks really creepy. His tilted head. His distant eyes. His, uh... torso. D:

Haha, no problem at all! :P I bought that Blossom when I was around 10 years old and on holiday with my parents in Belgium (there was this movie/cartoon collectibles shop). I remember her being very expensive (because she is figure/collectible quality! and not a toy!!!) which is why my parents said I needed to choose one of the three, since all of them would be too expensive. Blossom and Buttercup were always my favorites, but I remember Blossom coming with the nicest accesories. :)

Blossom came with a huge amount of accesories of Utonium's laboratory with Utonium as a dog included too! (Remember that episode? xD) But...since I was a young child and saw her as a toy I didn't keep the box...and over the years lost all accesories including Utonium. :'( So now I only have her + her base left! But good news! She is an action figure with moveable parts: PICTURE #176053 , PICTURE #176058 and PICTURE #176059 (Sorry for blurry old pictures.)

You mean this picture? xD View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-GpJFpKkcCgI/Up4uhsUYQKI/AAAAAAAAE-I/VJhlvfoxv_0/s640/IMG_8866.JPG

victorviper (Vor 5 Jahren) #1892499When I first saw this review I thought to myself "an Alter scale figure that I've never seen?", before realizing this was actually a trading figure. The details look pretty good for a trading figure, but you'd expect that from Alter I guess. The timing of the review is good, since ITEM #186018 just went up for preorder. That might be my most anticipated figure right now for 2014.
Also, that's quite an eclectic shelf on which you've got this figure displayed :)

Even when seeing my own pictures I would think it's a scaled figure if not for the small trading figure box behind it! And jep, it was to be expected from Alter, but I was still impressed since I didn't own any other Alter trading figures!

I didn't notice ITEM #186018 already went up! :O I really like her too, but I don't think I will pre-order her. Are you planning a review from her when you receive her? ^w^

And hehe, yeah, I have a few "left-over-shelves" to call them like that on which I put action figures and trading figrues I have no complete sets of. ;)

Yoruno (Vor 5 Jahren) #1892645Thank you for the review. I have this set of Last Exile figures, and they're in a much better condition, no wears, no darkened parts... I'd give 10/10 for painting. What you call the outside of the wings is actually the inside for a regular butterfly, which I think should have no pattern.
The thing I was surprised about was the plot synopsis. A successor to his brother? You meant sister, didn't you?

No problem! :)

It's mainly dust and dirt you see on the pictures. ^^'' Even the darker spots turned out to be dirt, so I think mine doesn't have much (if any) damages. ;) Unfortunately I couldn't retake the pictures after they were cleaned since they are packed and stored right now.

Looking at a real butterfly that is true, but on the original art of this figure, the outside also shows the pattern: View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0Fa2knqoT8M/Up9vcGyOpII/AAAAAAAAFAo/0jqfH4HP3II/s640/390640.jpg So it was a detail I expected, although not completely realistisc. ;)

Oops, I changed it. xD Even while proofreading I didn't notice that! I shouldn't proofread and upload my reviews this early in the morning, haha.
